John Calvin: Forged in His Spirit

May 18

“The Spirit Does Not Contradict the Gospel… But in promising it, of what sort did he declare his Spirit would be? One that would speak not from himself but would suggest to and instill into their minds what he had handed on through the Word [John 16:13]. Therefore the Spirit, promised to us, has not the task of inventing new and unheard-of revelations, or of forging a new kind of doctrine, to lead us away from the received doctrine of the gospel, but of sealing our minds with that very doctrine which is commended by the gospel.”

~ John Calvin/Institutes of the Christian Religion

What is the Holy Spirit? Is it something merely accessible or is there more that for some reason… I’m just not tapping into? Abiding in the presence of God is where the power of His Holy Spirit resides. But the Holy Spirit exists for more then something for me to “tap into”… for the Holy Spirit exists outside of God’s presence since it seeks to guide me into God’s presence.

What keeps me from abiding within His will seems my inability (actually, my unwillingness) to get before God and lay out the real issues that need to be dealt with.

I think abiding means having a place of permanent residence. That place for me exists, yet I still treat it like a hotel. Coming and going as if on vacation; trying to pay a bill that has already long ago been settled. To abide in means to live in and I have not yet come to the place where I live in God’s Will. You don’t make time to get there, you wake up there and always return there. Are we able to abide in God’s presence continually? In theory… yes. In reality… well, I certainly don’t. But I can constantly be moving towards a place in my life where I make God’s presence more and more of a home and that is my goal. The room is prepared; dinner is on the table and the bed is made; all that is left is for me to come home – and stay a little longer each time. There is so much warmth, comfort and power in the abiding of God’s presence.

It will be the Holy Spirit that will lead us into that abiding presence of God’s Truth and Power. THAT is what the Holy Spirit is and THAT is what the Holy Spirit has been tasked with! The Holy Spirit hasn’t been given us to reveal new Truth to our own spirits… we cannot even explain and fully understand the revelations and Truth about God which already pre-exist… how can we possible handle anything new? The Holy Spirit’s aim is to teach us who God is and lead us into a better spiritual life of fuller knowledge of the Grace and purposes of Christ our Lord. That is more then enough for us to handle! Focus on learning to hear and follow His voice and the leading of His Holy Spirit. It will be enough. It will take you into incredible places if you can learn to listen and follow His Holy Spirit. I will be forged into a person of great wisdom and power, a person capable of tremendous things if I will allow myself to be forged in His Holy Spirit.

Peace, SAG

Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 44:1-5

1 “But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen!

2 Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen.

3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.

4 They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams.

5 This one will say, ‘I am the LORD’s,’ another will call on the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ and name himself by the name of Israel.”
